Cuvva car clubs make it even easier for people to share and borrow cars using Cuvva’s short-term car insurance. We’ve got a general explainer in our car clubs support hub, so this article will focus specifically on public car clubs 🚙

Cuvva’s public car clubs

Cuvva car clubs can be:

  • Private - invite only

  • Public - anyone living nearby can see the club on Cuvva and borrow vehicles in the club using Cuvva's short-term car insurance

It's totally up to the admin.

Making a public car club is the best way of lending or borrowing a car in your local area - and also making a little money for yourself. Anyone on Cuvva living within walking distance of the car can join the club and ask to borrow the car when the owner's not using it, using Cuvva’s fully comprehensive cover.

It's super handy for borrowers, who can insure themselves to drive a car around the corner from their house. It could be cheaper than a taxi, and you can check the car's availability in the car club whenever you need to get on the road.

While anyone on Cuvva living near the car club can join, the admin still chooses who can borrow their car, when they borrow it, and how much borrowers pay them as a fee.

Admins can also choose the range in which the car is visible - so if they only want nearby neighbours to see it, that’s fine. Or if they'd like more people to find your club, they can expand the area up to 1 mile.

Here’s how it all works 👇

How to set up a public car club

It’s super easy to start your own public Cuvva car club and only takes a few minutes.

  1. Click the ‘Car clubs’ tab in the Cuvva app

  2. Give your car club a name. It could be simple (‘John’s car club’), detailed ( ‘Essex Avenue car club’) or even quirky and fun (‘The Wheel Deal’)

  3. Add your car and confirm your identity if you haven’t already

  4. Set your car’s location and choose the range your car is visible in, then set your club to ‘Public’

And that’s that!

There are a few other optional things you can set up to make things easier for yourself and borrowers, like a description with car rules, a note highlighting when your car is usually available, plus a fee for borrowing (you can also keep it free).

And you can speed up the process of people finding and joining your public car club by sharing a link to it in local community groups or WhatsApp channels

Switching from private to public

This is ultra-simple too. All you need to do is go to your existing private car club, click the ‘Private’ button and tap ‘Make my club public’.

You’ll need to just confirm your identity if you haven’t already and set your car’s location, then you're good to go.

How to find and join a public car club

To find a public club near you, just click the ‘Car clubs’ tab in the Cuvva app and then hit the button ‘View local car clubs’. If there are any nearby, you’ll be shown a list of clubs you can join right away. If there aren’t any clubs in your area, don’t worry. Keep checking back, because new ones are being created every day!

Keep an eye out for emails from Cuvva, too. We'll send you an email letting you know if a new Cuvva car club set to public starts nearby.

How to make your public car club private

Click the ‘Public’ button in your car club and then tap ‘Make my club private’. Easy!

Just remember - if you set your club to private, only people already in your club will be able to borrow your car. This means you might miss out on potential borrows from people in your area who can’t access it going forward.
