(To buy impound cover, you'll need the latest version of the Cuvva app. You can update your app at the AppStore or PlayStore.)

If your car’s been impounded, you may need a special type of insurance to get it released. Many policies - including Cuvva’s regular temporary cover - won’t be accepted at the pound.

But the good news is that Cuvva does offer specialist impound insurance. It’s super quick to sort in the app and gives you the legally-required cover you need to collect your car.

How to get impound insurance

Time is ticking. Pounds charge eye-watering daily fees, and sell or destroy your car if you don’t collect it in time. Here’s how to get impound cover quickly:

  1. Download the Cuvva app and head to the ‘Get insured’ tab - Then tap the button with three dots in the top-right corner of the screen.

  2. Select ‘Impound cover’ from the drop-down menu - And then tap ‘Get impound cover’.

  3. Choose when you need the cover to start - And enter some quick details about the car and your driving history.

  4. Pay, and then head to the pound - You now have legal cover to retrieve your car.

This will give you third-party cover for 30 days, the minimum required to release a vehicle.

What’s included and not included

Here’s what’s included in a Cuvva impound car insurance policy:

Third-party cover - other people (and their cars or property) are covered if you get in an accident

30 days of insurance - the minimum most pounds require to release your car

Cover across Britain - this means England, Scotland, and Wales, but not Northern Ireland

Here’s what’s not included:

Comprehensive cover - you won’t be covered for damage to your own car or belongings

Cover for vans, motorhomes, bikes etc - you can only insure a car

Breakdown cover - you’ll need to arrange this separately if needed

Who can buy impound insurance?

There are some restrictions on who can buy impound insurance from Cuvva:

  • You must be the registered keeper and legal owner of the car

  • You must hold a valid full UK driving licence

  • You must not have previously had insurance refused, voided or cancelled by an insurer

  • Your car must be roadworthy

There are some other restrictions depending on age, car type, and driving history. You can check by trying to get a quote in the app.

Can I use a normal Cuvva policy for an impounded car?

Regular temporary Cuvva policies aren’t valid as they don’t cover the release of a car impounded by a government authority. You need one of Cuvva’s impound car insurance policies to release your car.

Can I cancel my impound policy?

You can cancel your impound policy if you were unable to use it due to the car being scrapped. You’ll need to show proof that the car was scrapped during the first 14 days of the policy.
