Excess on our temporary insurance
You’ll see the excess amount in the app before you pay. There isn’t one standard excess amount on our temporary insurance policies - it’s based on your quote.
We only have compulsory excess on short-term policies - so you can’t increase or reduce it.
Excess on our pay-monthly insurance
When you get a monthly subscription quote, the app will calculate the compulsory excess for your policy.
On most subscription policies, you’ll also see a voluntary excess amount, which you can adjust. Generally, choosing a higher voluntary excess will lower your price.
The total excess shown is the compulsory and voluntary excess added together.
Excess explained
Car insurance excess is the amount of money you’d have to pay towards an insurance claim.
You don’t have to pay the excess upfront - it’s usually just taken from the claim amount.
Here’s an example. Let’s say you were involved in an accident (hopefully you won’t be!) and the damage to your vehicle was £3000. If your excess was £500, you’d receive £2500 from your insurer.

We’ve written a detailed guide to car insurance excess, where you can find out about the different types of excess, how it is calculated, the types of claims you may need to pay excess on, and much more.
