Licence and car info

You can use Cuvva with:

  • A driving licence issued in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland)

  • An international driving licence from most countries in the EU and some outside it

However the vehicle itself must be registered in the UK. This means you can use a car from England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland to drive in Northern Ireland - but not a car issued in Europe, including the Republic of Ireland.

FYI: When driving with a Northern Irish or European licence, it must be a full licence. We can’t currently offer cover to learner drivers who don’t have a provisional GB licence issued in England, Scotland, or Wales.

Driving into the Republic of Ireland

You can drive abroad using a Cuvva policy, including driving from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland (or getting a ferry from England, Wales, or Scotland to the Republic).

However, keep in mind that your fully comprehensive Cuvva policy will most likely only give you third-party cover while driving outside of the UK, like in the Republic of Ireland.

When driving in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) your Cuvva policy will always be fully comprehensive. But if you drive from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland (or drive elsewhere in Europe) it will become a third-party cover policy.

Your policy must start and end in the UK

While you can drive in Europe, your policy must begin and end in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland). This means you need to make sure your policy is long enough for you to drive to Europe and back again. Otherwise you might end up stranded outside the UK with no cover.

This includes trips into the Republic of Ireland.
