The importance of declaring incidents when buying a policy

When you buy car insurance with Cuvva, it's super important to declare any incidents from the past 5 years.

To make sure you're properly covered and get the right price, make sure you enter the correct details when you get a quote. This will avoid issues or delays down the line and help us get you on the road as soon as possible 🛣️

What counts as an ‘incident’

Any incidents or accidents you were involved in must be declared. It doesn't matter whose fault it was or if you made a claim or not. That includes:

  • Any incidents reported, even if a claim wasn’t made or you weren’t the one driving your car at the time

  • Windscreen or glass damage claims

  • Theft of vehicle or its contents

  • Vandalism and vehicle fires

  • Third-party injury claims

🚨 Important: After 5 years, an incident shouldn't affect your prices anymore, but sometimes you might still be asked about it - in this case you must declare it.

How to declare your incidents

Before you start getting your quote or buying your policy, make sure you've got all the info about past incidents handy. Here’s how to declare your incidents:

  • If you're a new Cuvva user, the app will prompt you to declare previous incidents when you first make your account.

  • If you already have a Cuvva account, you can add new incidents in the app. Just go to Profile → Edit Account → Incidents.

Just so you know, you can't edit an incident yourself. If you need to this this, just send a message to our customer support team.

What happens if you fail to declare your incidents

When you try to pay for a policy, the app will cross-check your incidents against the Claims and Underwriting Exchange (CUE) database. If you miss any, you may get a quote denied message, or your policy may become void, and you will need to contact our Support team to add the incidents. This shouldn’t take long and we’ll hopefully be able to get you on the road soon, but don’t forget that adding incidents might cause your price to change or make it impossible for us to insure you.

What else you should know before declaring your incidents

Cuvva gets your licence details directly from the DVLA database when you sign up. So you don't need to declare speeding fines, previous driving bans, licence endorsements, or points.

There’s a few things to keep in mind though:

  • Claim status: If an incident or accident happened, you should always tell us about it - even if you didn't make a claim in the end.

  • Fault status: You should declare accidents or claims that weren’t your fault too. If it's ongoing, declare it as 'joint-fault'. If that changes later, just tell us.

  • Driver or policyholder: You should declare any incident that you were involved in, whether you were the driver, or a passenger. You'll also need to tell us about incidents involving named drivers on your insurance policy - even if you weren't in the car at the time.

  • Motorbike claims: Remember to add any accidents or claims involving motorbikes or other on-road vehicles.

What if I can’t get a quote after adding incidents?

If you receive a quote in the app, it means we can cover you! 🎉 But there are situations where Cuvva won’t be able to offer you insurance anymore.

This might happen if you’re under 21 and had a ‘fault’ or ‘join fault’ incident, if there were multiple incidents or if there’s issues with your licence. The app will usually explain why.

Don't worry though, these restrictions can always change, and you might want to try using Cuvva again in the future 👍

Removing an incident from your account

We can only change or remove an incident if we can see that the information you gave us was incorrect.

To update or remove an incident, we need to see an email, letter, or document from your insurer that either shows:

  • The correct information

  • That the incident never happened
