Number plates and your Cuvva policy

How to change plates, and whether you can drive on a private reg

Changing your number plate

If you’ve changed your number plate (also called a registration plate), you can still get temporary car insurance with Cuvva.

But first, you'll need to update the DVLA.

We use DVLA data to insure your vehicle so before you get a quote, you should register your new number plate with the DVLA as soon as possible.

Once that’s done, their records will update and you’ll be able to get a new quote as normal.

Changing plates during a policy

You can’t change the number plate on an active policy.

If your plate changes:

  • Your current policy won’t transfer

  • You’ll need to buy a new policy on the new registration

For this reason, it’s best to:

  • Change your plates before buying cover, or

  • Wait until your current policy has ended

If your new plate isn’t showing yet

It can take a little time for DVLA systems to update.

In most cases, we can still help you get insured sooner.

Just contact support in the app and share:

  • Your old registration

  • Your new registration

  • A photo of your V5C logbook or eV948 certificate

We’ll try to update your plate on our system so you can get covered.

Private plates

You can insure a car with private number plates, even if you’ve just changed them.

As long as:

  • The plate is registered with the DVLA, or

  • We’ve been able to update it on our system

you should be able to get a quote.
